Biei's Blue Pond winter illumination offers a distinctive evening for a Hokkaido holiday: bare tree trunks, changing light and a landscape whose appearance follows the weather. For Indian families planning winter 2026-2027, the key decision is how to fit that evening comfortably into the trip.

Start with two questions. Do you want to see exposed blue water, or are you looking for an illuminated winter landscape? And where will you sleep after the visit? Those answers should shape your travel dates, transport and hotel choice.

Confirmed dates and lighting hours for 2026-2027

Biei Tourism Association's 21 October announcement lists the Blue Pond illumination season as 22 October 2026 to 21 April 2027. All times below are Japan local time.

  • October and November: 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
  • December: 4:30 pm to 9:00 pm.
  • January: 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
  • February: 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm.
  • March: 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
  • April: 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.

The notice describes a lighting sequence of approximately 15 minutes. Check updates before departure; the event schedule does not guarantee access in every weather condition.

Will the pond still look blue in winter?

Do not expect the same view throughout the season. Biei Tourism Association explains in its winter scenery guide that the pond freezes and accumulated snow can conceal the blue water. Illumination then colours the snowy surface and standing trees.

If blue-water photography is your main reason for travelling, check recent local photographs and conditions before fixing the visit. If you want the winter light display, plan around the evening programme while accepting that snowfall, ice and visibility vary. The opening date of an illumination season is not a promise of deep snow.

Our cover is an interpretation of the winter setting. It should not be used to predict the exact colour, snow depth or lighting pattern on your visit.

Getting there: plan the return journey first

The official Blue Pond listing identifies Dohoku Bus access from JR Biei and JR Asahikawa stations. However, the existence of a daytime route does not confirm that there is a convenient bus after your chosen viewing time.

Before relying on public transport, check the dated timetable in both directions, the exact stop, onward connections and the last suitable departure. Do not use a previous winter's tour leaflet as confirmation of this season's service. A private transfer should also be booked with an agreed pickup location, waiting time and return destination.

Drivers should allow for winter conditions. JNTO's winter driving guidance explains the need for a suitable vehicle and that weather-related detours may extend journeys. For visitors unfamiliar with snowy roads, our recommendation is to consider an experienced local driver or an operating organised excursion.

Day trip or overnight stay?

A day trip can work when the full return journey fits your group, including dinner and the late arrival at your hotel. Ask for a realistic winter schedule from your actual departure point. An attractive list of stops is not enough to judge how tiring the day will be.

For families with small children, older travellers or keen photographers, KNI recommends considering an overnight stay in the Biei, Shirogane Onsen or Asahikawa area, according to the wider route. These bases have different transfer needs, so compare the complete journey rather than hotel price alone.

Confirm dinner service before choosing accommodation. A late return from the lights may conflict with a set dinner time. Share vegetarian, Jain or other essential meal requirements in advance and obtain confirmation from the property or planner.

A comfortable two-night planning idea

This is a suggested extension, not a fixed-departure package:

  1. Arrival day: transfer to your chosen base, check in and organise winter clothing. Keep the evening flexible if arriving after a long flight or rail journey.
  2. Main sightseeing day: choose a modest daytime programme, allow a warm indoor break, then visit the Blue Pond after that month's lights switch on. Agree dinner and return arrangements before leaving.
  3. Onward day: continue to the next Hokkaido stop with a weather buffer. Avoid depending on a long winter road transfer immediately before an international departure.

For a shorter trip, one night may be sufficient if arrival and onward connections work. Two nights offer more breathing room, but neither length guarantees particular weather or snow conditions.

Should you add Shirahige Falls and Birke Forest?

The current official illumination notice also lists Shirahige Falls lighting from sunset to 9:00 pm year-round. Birke Forest is listed for the same seasonal dates and monthly lighting hours as the Blue Pond.

Choose these additions according to the group's comfort and available transport. Three photo stops can mean repeated periods outside and several boarding movements. For a family, we suggest making the pond the main visit, then adding one nearby stop only if conditions and energy levels allow.

Clothing, walking and photography

JNTO's Hokkaido clothing guide recommends warm layers, protective outerwear, sturdy winter boots, gloves and headwear. Choose shoes suited to snow and ice; a light city jacket and ordinary trainers are a poor starting point for an outdoor winter evening.

  • For children: plan short outdoor periods and warm breaks. Discuss suitable seating and restraints when arranging a vehicle.
  • For mobility needs: ask about current walking surfaces and the route from parking to the viewing area. Confirm assistance before booking.
  • For photographs: keep devices charged, allow time for changing light, and leave space for other visitors to pass.

Biei's visitor rules prohibit walking on the frozen pond and entering farmland, including snow-covered fields. Stay in permitted viewing areas and keep roads clear.

Combine Biei with a wider Hokkaido holiday

Build the extension around your actual arrival airport, hotel nights and onward travel. If visiting during the festival period, our Sapporo Snow Festival 2027 guide can help start the wider discussion. Biei needs its own travel allowance within that plan.

Travel agents should specify the vehicle arrangement, driver waiting time, parking, guiding, meals and accommodation in the quotation. Identify what is included, what depends on availability and what happens if weather changes the evening plan. This makes the itinerary easier for clients to understand before they pay.

Plan your Biei winter visit with KNI

Send KNI your travel dates, arrival airport, number of travellers, children's ages, existing hotel plan, meal requirements and preferred pace. We can help assess a Biei evening visit or overnight extension and coordinate suitable Japan-side arrangements, subject to availability.

Ask KNI to include Biei Blue Pond in your Hokkaido winter itinerary.

Helpful Information

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Biei Blue Pond illumination season for 2026-2027?

The current Biei Tourism Association notice lists 22 October 2026 to 21 April 2027. Confirm operating updates before travel.

Does the Blue Pond illumination start at the same time every month?

No. The published start time varies by month, from 4:30 pm in December to 6:30 pm in April. The listed finish is 9:00 pm, Japan local time.

Will I see blue water at the pond in winter?

Not necessarily. When the pond freezes and snow covers it, the exposed blue water can disappear. The illuminated snow and trees create a different winter scene.

Can I return by public bus after the lights?

Check the current timetable for your exact date and viewing time. A daytime bus route does not guarantee an evening return. Arrange suitable onward transport before travelling.

Should families stay overnight for Biei Blue Pond?

KNI recommends considering an overnight stay when a late return would be tiring. The best base depends on your wider route, meal arrangements and transport. Day trips need a realistic winter schedule.

Can KNI arrange a Hokkaido itinerary including Biei?

KNI can help plan a Biei visit or overnight extension with accommodation and transport subject to availability. Share your dates, group ages, hotel plan, meal needs and budget.
